AbstrakBackground: The Palestinian-Israeli conflict has given rise to various forms of global solidarity, one of which is through the use of visual symbols on social media. Watermelon, which is visually similar in color to the Palestinian flag, has been transformed into a symbol of resistance and support that is widely spread on Instagram. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the representative meaning of watermelon as a form of nonverbal communication in support of Palestine and understand its meaning transformation through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic perspective. Methods: The method used is descriptive qualitative with non-participant observation techniques and documentation of Instagram content featuring watermelon symbols. The analysis was carried out using Peirce's trichotomy model, namely representamen, object, and interpretant, which was expanded into sub-classifications of qualisign, sinsign, legisign, icon, index, symbol, rheme, decisign, and argument. Results: The results showed that watermelon experienced a shift in meaning from an agricultural object to a symbol full of humanitarian, political and ideological values. As a representamen, the watermelon replaces the Palestinian national symbol; as an object, it refers to the social context of the struggle; and as an interpretant, it forms an emotional and ideological collective understanding among social media users. This symbol plays an important role in circumventing digital censorship and shaping transnational political consciousness. Conclusion: The conclusion of this research shows that the watermelon visual is an effective symbolic strategy in conveying the message of resistance implicitly. Implications: The implication is that the reinterpretation of visual signs in digital media can be a significant cultural resistance tool in the global solidarity movement.
